UK has become the fourth most attractive country for clean energy investment
September, 2013
UK has become the fourth most attractive country for clean energy investment according to new energy world network. That’s one place up from last year.
The UK was ranked fourth most attractive country for renewables investment as we saw ourselves ahead of Australia; who were placed in sixth and behind the likes of US, China and Germany. The UK’ ranking was said to have been boosted significantly by its score for onshore and offshore wind from the previous index. It seems like to UK renewables industry has been putting our notoriously, unpredictable weather to good use.
Aside from this the UK also ranked fourth for onshore wind, second in biomass and the UK became first in the world for our dedicated offshore wind index. These statistics no doubt, bought encouragement to the UK’s renewables sector.
Since 2010 £29 billion of private sector investment has been funded into the UK for opportunities of growth in clean and renewable energy. These investments are starting to pay off. The positive signs from the energy announcements this summer have shown the growth in renewable energy is huge across the UK and Europe with further opportunities for development. However could politics and the government be hindering this success?
Ben Warren environmental finance leader at Earnest & Young stated last year the UK’s drop to sixth in the indices was down to the “political limbo”, which he feared could discourage investment in renewables. He also stated that the UK had failed to provide nesseccary support to Biomass projects. Saying, “The government’s controversial move toward shale gas appears to be at the expense of biomass power”.
Can we keep our rankings next year?
